We are building a new internal engineering team for our e-commerce platform and you are the first hire. Today the platform has minimal test coverage and your job is to change that.
You will build the test automation infrastructure from scratch – Cypress for E2E, Jest and React Testing Library for units – on a Next.js 16 platform with a Frontastic BFF layer, CommerceTools commerce engine, Algolia search, and 20+ third-party integrations.
You will also work alongside AI agents. Our CI/CD pipeline includes an AI Test Generation Agent that automatically creates tests for every pull request. You will review the agent’s output, refine its prompts, and improve its accuracy over time. This is a human-plus-AI role – you set the patterns, the agent scales them.
What you will do
- Stand up Cypress and Jest/RTL test infrastructure from zero on a Next.js 16 + TypeScript 5.9 codebase
- Write critical-path E2E tests for: browse → search (Algolia) → product page → cart → checkout → payment portals → order confirmation
- Build mocking infrastructure for the Frontastic action system (all API calls route through a central HTTP client called fetch-api-hub.ts)
- Create mocking strategies for 20+ third-party services so tests run fast and without external dependencies
- Define the test strategy document: what to test, coverage targets, naming conventions, folder structure
- Integrate test suites into GitHub Actions CI/CD pipeline (unit tests < 3 min, E2E < 10 min)
- Review and improve AI-generated tests weekly – tune the agent’s prompts to produce higher-quality output
- Hit 40% coverage by Month 3, 60% by Month 6, 80% by Month 12
What you bring
- 5+ years of test automation experience on web applications
- Strong Cypress or Playwright (both is ideal). You have opinions on when to use each.
- Experience testing Next.js or React applications with TypeScript
- Experience building test infrastructure from scratch – not just writing tests on an existing framework
- Understanding of API mocking and how to isolate tests from third-party services
- Experience integrating test suites into CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions preferred)
- Comfortable reading and understanding application code, not just testing it
Bonus (not required)
- Experience with AI-assisted testing tools or prompt engineering
- Visual regression testing (Percy, Chromatic, or similar)
- Performance testing (Lighthouse)
- Experience with headless commerce platforms (CommerceTools, Shopify, BigCommerce)
